COURSE OVERVIEW

Assessment of Needs:

Rapid advances in HIV disease management require the ongoing attention of practitioners involved in HIV medicine. This course will address the implications of new information on strategies for clinical management. Information will be presented through a mix of didactic lectures and clinically relevant cases developed by an expert faculty of HIV/AIDS clinicians and researchers.

Conflicts of Interest:

Information regarding financial relationships with commercial companies that have interests in the content discussed, is obtained from all parties with control over the activity content (ie, co-chairs, faculty, and IAS–USA staff), and any real or apparent conflicts of interest of those parties are resolved prior to the activity being delivered. Financial affiliations of all those parties are published in the course syllabus. Individuals who refuse to disclose financial interests may not participate in the CME activity.

Who Should Attend:

This course is designed for physicians and other clinical decision makers who are actively involved in the medical care of people with HIV/AIDS, specifically those who:

Have a solid, working knowledge of HIV disease management
Provide comprehensive or specialty care for patients with HIV/AIDS
Are currently active in HIV/AIDS research

This course is relevant for practitioners who are involved in HIV/AIDS patient care, including nurse practitioners and other nursing professionals, physician assistants, pharmacists, and others.

Representatives and employees of commercial companies (pharmaceutical, diagnostic, medical products, advertising, insurance, investment, communications firms, etc) must contact the IAS–USA regarding registration procedures.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

Design antiretroviral strategies that consider current data on:

The role and use of newer approved drugs
Antiretroviral regimen failure

Explain the behavioral, epidemiologic, and virologic factors associated with sexual transmission of HIV
Describe the current potential for HIV eradication
Formulate appropriate management strategies for neurocognitive complications of HIV disease
Describe new data on pre-exposure prophylaxis and vaccines
Describe the incidence and management of dermatologic manifestations of HIV disease in dark-skinned individuals
Describe current data on investigational hepatitis C virus drugs as they impact the potential for treatment

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION INFORMATION

Accreditation:

The IAS–USA is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation Statement:

The IAS–USA designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Please note that nursing continuing education credits are not provided for this course. Nurse practitioners and other nursing professionals will receive a certificate of attendance.

American Academy of Family Physicians Credit:

This activity, 19th Annual Improving the Management of HIV Disease Advanced CME Course with a beginning date of May 16, 2011, has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 6.00 prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

The registration fee is $60 on or before April 25, and will increase to $80 after April 25. Early registration is strongly recommended. Preregistration closes on May 9.

If you have not registered or have not received registration confirmation 2 weeks prior to the course, please contact us to confirm that seating is still available.

Registered attendees may access the course syllabus, in PDF format, on our Web site after May 9. Please note: The syllabus is typically more than 100 pages long and may take extra time to download. Please submit requests for cancellation or substitution in writing to the IAS–USA office by May 2.
