General Educational Objectives for
2008 Courses


Upon completion of an IAS-USA course, participants will be able to:

  • Design antiretroviral strategies that consider current data on:
    • When to initiate therapy Managing initial treatment failure and complicated failure and the use of newly approved drugs and assays Mechanisms of antiretroviral resistance and nuances in interpreting resistance test results Drug-drug interactions among antiretrovirals and between other medications The status of investigational antiretroviral drugs and classes
    • Difficult metabolic complications and toxicities of HIV and its therapies
  • Identify and discuss new issues in HIV pathogenesis, as they impact clinical treatment strategies
  • Formulate appropriate management strategies for HIV coinfection, such as hepatitis B and C viruses and sexually transmitted infections
  • Describe the incidence, diagnosis, and management of common manifestations of HIV disease, such as oral and dermatologic, as well as opportunistic infections and diseases
  • Formulate appropriate management strategies for special populations such as substance users
  • Discuss topics in HIV clinical treatment specific to the needs of the regional HIV specialists
