CME Programs

Continuing medical education (CME) courses are the core activities of the International Antiviral Society–USA. Courses include annual one-day CME programs and online, distance-learning cases. The goal of the CME programs is to provide advanced-level courses that present balanced, timely, scientifically rigorous, and clinically relevant information about HIV and other viral diseases. The activities are designed for physicians who are actively involved in viral diseases management. In these programs, didactic lectures provide state-of-the-art reviews of a particular topic. Case or "caselette" (case vignette) presentations use clinical models to explore selected topics and controversial or confusing issues in viral medicine.

Overview

The International Antiviral Society–USA sponsors advanced CME programs designed to provide cutting edge information for practitioners who are actively involved in medical care for people with HIV or other viral infections.

One-day advanced CME courses provide participants with the latest insights and data on the full spectrum treatment issues related to HIV/AIDS and other viral diseases. Core course components include:

  • New and investigational drugs in HIV/AIDS therapy
  • New and investigational drugs for other viral infections including hepatitis C
  • New data presented at research conferences
  • Strategies for initiating antiretroviral therapy
  • Managing metabolic complications of HIV disease and its therapies
  • Managing antiretroviral failure
  • Interpretation of antiretroviral drug resistance testing
  • Management of HIV/hepatitis C virus coinfection
  • HIV pathogenesis, as it relates to treatment strategies

Activity Faculty

The IAS–USA Core Faculty includes recognized leaders in the field of viral disease research and treatment. For each CME course, national leaders team with local experts to tailor courses to the clinicians' needs in the region. Information is presented through didactic lectures and case-study panel discussions. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, and an Audience Response System is utilized to facilitate discussion and the sharing of experiences.

Presentation Locations

Courses are held in select regions where physicians and other practitioners are likely to have in their care a high proportion of patients with HIV or other viral infections.

Go to Cases on the Web
Cases on the Web is an ongoing series of case-based, online CME activities produced and sponsored by the International Antiviral Society–USA. Each activity focuses on a complex issue in viral disease management and includes a didactic introduction to the issue, along with several case studies and interactive sets of clinical decision points. The distance learning course enables physicians around the world to access cutting edge information and gives them the opportunity to hone their treatment decision-making skills.

ACCME Accreditation
The International Antiviral Society–USA (IAS–USA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The International Antiviral Society–USA recently received Accreditation with Commendation, joining an elite group of organizations in the United States that have been awarded this prestigious status "reserved for programs which are truly exceptional," according to the ACCME.

Attendance Policy
