Dr O'Connor is a general internist in the Section of General Medicine of the Department of Internal Medicine and a Professor of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine specializing in addiction. Currently, Dr O'Connor is Chief of the Section of General Internal Medicine at Yale and Co-Chief of the Generalist Firm at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He has focused his scholarly work on the interface between primary care and substance abuse. This has included research examining the transfer of substance abuse treatment strategies from "specialty" settings to primary care settings. His publications in this area include studies on the management of opioid withdrawal in primary care settings, opioid maintenance in primary care, and the use of naltrexsone for treating alcohol dependence in primary care patients. He has been active in medical education on substance abuse both nationally and internationally.
