Management Guidelines

The International Antiviral Society–USA commissions volunteer panels of experts to develop clinical practice recommendations and guidelines in areas of antiviral medicine that are confusing or controversial. Funding for the guidelines is provided by the IAS–USA; commercial support is not accepted. Expert panel members participate on a volunteer basis.

  • Antiretroviral Treatment of Adult HIV Infection – 2010 Recommendations of the IAS–USA Panel (Thompson MA, Aberg JA, Cahn P, et al. JAMA. 2010;304(3):321-333)
    In December 2010, a panel of the IAS–USA published its updated recommendations concerning when to start antiretroviral therapy, the choice of initial regimens, patient monitoring, and changes for virologic failure.

  • Antiretroviral Drug Resistance Testing in Adult HIV-1 Infection – 2008 Recommendations of an IAS–USA Panel (Hirsch MS, Günthard HF, Schapiro JM, et al. Clin Infect Dis. 2008;47(2):266-285)
    In July 2008, a panel of the IAS–USA published its updated recommendations on HIV-1 drug resistance testing in HIV-1-infected adults.

Members of the board of directors and staff of the IAS–USA collaborated in 1999 and 2000 with investigators at the University of California San Francisco to study the relationship between physician experience, self-perceived expertise, and confidence in providing care in the field of HIV. They surveyed 359 physicians attending IAS–USA CME courses in 1999. The results of their work were recently published in AIDS Patient Care and STDs:
