Welcome to the Clinical Conference

The 8th Annual Clinical Conference for Ryan White CARE Act (RWCA) Title I, II, III, and IV practitioners will be held from June 16-18, 2005, at the Fairmont New Orleans Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Clinical Conference promises to be a rewarding and productive exchange of essential updates and training for clinical staff that are prescribers (physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other direct clinical care practitioners) and are actively involved in HIV care in RWCA-funded clinics. The conference also offers new grantees the valuable opportunity to discuss cases with experts and network with other RWCA clinicians.

Workshop

Each registrant may attend up to 2 interactive workshop sessions. Each workshop will be approximately 1-hour in length and will be held simultaneously with other workshops. Workshops will be held on Friday, June 17, 2005 and Saturday, June 18, 2005. Seating in workshops is limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. If your completed form is not received by May 10, 2005, your attendance at individual workshops will be determined by available space. This may mean you might be unable to participate in workshops dedicated to your professional interests.

Goals and Objectives

The goal of this conference is to provide a comprehensive and timely overview of HIV management issues and current strategies in HIV care for physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in RWCA Title I, II, III, and IV funded clinics.

The conference will promote active participation among practitioners throughout the 2.5 days of lectures, case presentations, panel discussions, and workshop sessions. Attendees are encouraged to bring cases and questions for discussion.

Upon completion of the conference, participants will be able to:

  • Design antiretroviral treatment regimens that consider
    • Current data on initiating antiretroviral therapy
    • Management of regimen failure and drug resistance
    • The role of HIV resistance testing, and nuances in interpretation of their results
    • Metabolic complications, including lipid abnormalities, cardiovascular risk, insulin resistance and diabetes, and bone metabolism abnormalities
  • Describe the potential future role of pharmacogenomics and investigational antiretrovirals in HIV management.
  • List the major issues surrounding the management of specific patient populations with HIV infection, including older patients, pregnant women, children, and people with mental health disorders.
  • Design methods for improving access to services and retention in care for HIV-infected patients, including the utilization of the chronic care model.
  • Develop treatment strategies for routine care of HIV-infected patients, as well as describe the incidence, diagnosis, and management of specific coinfections including minor opportunistic diseases and oral and dermatological manifestations.

The International AIDS Society–USA is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

The International AIDS Society–USA designates this educational activity for a maximum of 14 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award.

Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he or she actually spent in the activity. Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.

Nursing CE

This program has been approved for 16.8 contact hours of continuing education by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Program ID 0506244”.


Registration Information

Registration for the 2005 Clinical Conference is at maximum capacity. Please note that anyone submitting a registration after the maximum is reached will be notified and placed on a wait list. Prescribing clinicians on this wait list will be contacted on a first-come first-served basis, should an opening become available.

Registration is available to physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and others who directly provide clinical care in RWCA Title I, II, III, and IV-funded programs. Attendance is limited to the first 350 registrants, and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no fee to register for this conference, and there will be no on-site registration.

The registration deadline is April 29, 2005. A confirmation letter will be sent, along with more detailed information on the conference.

Attendees are responsible for their own arrangements for air travel to and from New Orleans, hotel stay, ground transportation, and per diem costs, as covered by their HRSA grants. Travel costs to the conference are allowable with attendees' current Title III or IV funds. Title I and II subcontractors should contact the grantee of record to determine if these costs are allowable.
