OVERVIEW

The 10th Annual Clinical Update for the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Clinicians, practitioners will be held from June 14 to 16, 2007, in Phoenix, Arizona. It promises to be a rewarding and productive exchange of essential updates and training and offers new grantees the valuable opportunity to discuss cases with experts and network with other RW HIV/AIDS Program  clinicians.

The goal of the meeting is to provide a comprehensive and timely overview of HIV treatment issues and current strategies in HIV medical care for prescribers in RW HIV/AIDS Program, Part A, B, C, and D funded programs. This state-of-the-art Continuing Medical Education (CME) program is sponsored by the International AIDS Society–USA (IAS–USA) and will include 3 days of lectures, interactive workshops, and meet-the-experts sessions. These are designed for clinical staff who are prescribers (physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other direct clinical decision makers) and are actively involved in HIV care in RW HIV/AIDS Program-funded clinics. Attendees are encouraged to bring cases and questions for discussion. This activity has been approved for AMA PRA credit.

The Clinical Update is planned and supported in collaboration with staff from the HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the US Department of Health and Human Services, and in alliance with the Southeast AIDS Training and Education Center (SEATEC).

CLINICAL UPDATE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the update, participants will be able to:
  • Identify current issues and future trends in the HIV epidemic and the populations impacted
  • Discuss new recommendations in HIV testing and their potential impact on medical practice and the healthcare system
  • Design antiretroviral treatment regimens that consider
    • New developments in the study of the pathogenesis of HIV
    • Current information on initiating antiretroviral therapy
    • Management of complicated antiretroviral failure and drug resistance
    • The role of HIV resistance testing and nuances in interpretation of the results
    • The role of new investigational antiretrovirals and new classes
    • Long-term metabolic complications, including insulin resistance and bone disorders
  • Develop counseling strategies to address HIV as a family disease and the relationship between HIV and domestic violence
  • List the major issues regarding the management of specific patient populations with HIV infection, including Hispanics and African refugees
  • Discuss current treatment strategies for HIV-infected patients with coexisting conditions, such as substance use, chronic pain, and mental health disorders
  • Describe the incidence, diagnosis, and management of specific coinfections commonly seen in HIV-infected patients, including hepatitis B and C viruses
  • Describe new ideas for overcoming various barriers to providing HIV care and managing provider burnout


CONTINUING EDUCATION

Attendees may earn continuing education credit valuable to their professional discipline. HRSA/HAB is partnering with the IAS-USA and the Southeast AIDS Training and Education Center SEATEC to provide continuing education credits for the 10th Annual RW HIV/AIDS Program Clinical Update.

The following will be made available to meeting registrants at no additional charge.
  • CME Accreditation Statement
    The International AIDS Society–USA is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

  • Credit Designation Statement
    The International AIDS Society–USA designates this educational activity for a maximum of 19 AMA Category 1 Credits.™ Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 16.25 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

  • Nursing Contact Hours
    SEATEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Georgia Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This event has been approved for 19 contact hours.

REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED FOR THE CLINICAL UPDATE.

In the event that there are any recent registration cancellations, we may be able to accommodate additional attendees. If you are a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or other direct clinical decision maker in a Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and are interested in attending the Clinical Update, please phone IAS–USA at 415-544-9400.  

If you are unable to attend the meeting, we recommend that you bookmark this Website. Approximately 2 weeks after the conclusion of the program, a complete Webcast of the program will be available for viewing and CME credits.  There is no fee to participate in the online CME program.

Those who attend the RW HIV/AIDS Program Clinical Update 2007 will be charged a hotel/meeting package fee to cover those expenses that cannot be covered by HRSA/HAB such as meals and breaks. Your travel costs and hotel stay are not included in the hotel/meeting package fee and must be booked separately. (See Hotel Reservation section below for details on reserving a guest room.)


Transferring a Registration

  • Registrants who are unable to attend may transfer their registration to another clinical decision maker who is actively involved in HIV care in a RW HIV/AIDS Program, Part A, B, C, and D funded program

  • There is no fee to transfer a registration

  • Transfer requests must received by the IAS–USA by June 1, 2007

  • Requests must be in writing and may be submitted via fax to 415-544-9402, or email to rwprogram2007 ”at” iasusa.org. Requests must be accompanied by a completed registration form for the person who will attend the Clinical Update

  • In addition to transferring your meeting registration, you must cancel your guest room reservation separately and may do so by contacting the Hyatt Regency Phoenix at 602-252-1234 or 800-233-1234. Please note that your guest room reservation must be cancelled a minimum of 24 hours prior to the reserved arrival date to avoid any penalties


Cancelling a Registration

  • To avoid any cancellation processing fees, registrants who are unable to attend may submit a request to transfer their registration. Please note the deadline to submit a transfer request above

  • Hotel/meeting package fees and reimbursements are administered by the Hyatt Regency Phoenix. The hotel will issue a reimbursement for cancelled registrations less the hotel’s processing fee (see fee schedule below)

  • Cancellation fees:
    Any cancellation made before June 7, 2007 will be charged a $25 processing fee
    Any cancellations made on or after June 7, 2007 will be charged a $75 processing fee

  • You must cancel your guest room reservation separately and may do so by contacting the hotel at 602-252-1234 or 800-233-1234. Please note that your guest room reservation must be cancelled a minimum of 24 hours prior to the reserved arrival date to avoid any penalties

  • Refunds for hotel/meeting package fees less the processing fee will take 2 to 3 weeks to process

ALLOWABLE TRAVEL AND REGISTRATION COSTS

Attendees are responsible for their own arrangements for air travel to and from Phoenix, hotel stay, ground transportation, hotel/meeting package fees (to cover meals and breaks), and per diem costs. RW HIV/AIDS Program, Part C and D attendees should review their grants to determine what travel and meal costs are allowable by their current HRSA grants. RW HIV/AIDS Program, Part A and B subcontractors should contact the grantee of record to determine if these costs are allowable.

We suggest that you book your air travel after receiving your meeting registration confirmation to avoid any cancellation penalties should the meeting be full.

    $99.00 for triple occupancy

Taxis

  1. What are the meeting dates for the 2007 RW HIV/AIDS Program Clinical Update?
    The 10th Annual Clinical Update for RW HIV/AIDS Program, Part A, B, C, and D will be held from June 14-16, 2007.
    • The Clinical Update will begin on Thursday, June 14 with a workshop session at 10:00am and the opening plenary at 11:10am. The Clinical Update will close on Saturday, June 16 at approximately 12:35pm


  2. What are the days and times for checking in onsite and receiving my meeting materials?
    • For those arriving early, the registration desk in the Regency Ballroom Foyer will be open on Wednesday, June 13 from 3:00-7:00pm.

    The International AIDS Society–USA designates this educational activity for a maximum of 19 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he or she actually spent in the activity.

    Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.

  9. What will the weather be like and what is there to do in Phoenix?
    Phoenix weather in June will have temperatures in the mid 90s to low 100s. However, as the meeting spaces will be air conditioned, you may wish to bring a sweater or other cover-up should the meeting space be cool.

    Phoenix offers an array of dining and evening entertainment options for those who wish to explore the city. The Greater Phoenix Conventions & Visitors Bureau provides a wealth of information on local Phoenix entertainment. There is also an interactive map which allows you to view attractions close to the meeting site.
