Remembering California Senator Dianne Feinstein (1933-2023)

The IAS–USA celebrates the life and career of California Senator Dianne Feinstein, who passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2023. Feinstein was a champion for many progressive causes, including women’s rights, LGBT+ rights, rational gun control legislation, access to health care, and an individual’s right to control their bodies. Those of us who live in or love San Francisco (where the headquarters of IAS–USA is located) especially acknowledge Feinstein’s years as a civic leader that preceded her national career in the US Senate. While serving as mayor of San Francisco (November 27, 1978 – January 8, 1988), Feinstein worked with leaders in the medical community, including IAS–USA Scientific Leadership Board Co-Chair Paul Volberding, to confront the early onslaught of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
