Gerald H. Friedland, MD

The IAS–USA is proud to present its Lifetime of Leadership Award—established nearly 15 years ago to honor individuals whose contributions have left a profound and lasting impact on HIV medicine, scientific education, and the mission of the IAS–USA—to Dr Gerald Friedland.

Dr Friedland served as the Director of the AIDS Program at Yale New Haven Hospital and Professor of Medicine and of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Yale School of Medicine. He was also the original Co-Chair of the IAS–USA’s Annual Update on HIV Management in New York City, now known as The Scott M Hammer Annual Update on HIV Management in New York, helping to shape one of the organization’s cornerstone educational programs.

His distinguished career includes service on the Governing Council of the International AIDS Society, the National Advisory Council of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the Advisory Council of the Office of AIDS Research. He serves on the WHO HIV/TB Working Group and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center in New York City.

A pioneering clinician–scientist, Dr Friedland has advanced research at the intersection of biology, clinical care, and behavior. His work has shaped understanding of adherence to HIV therapies and the integration of prevention strategies within clinical care, including the development and evaluation of interventions to reduce HIV transmission risk among people with HIV in care.

The IAS–USA is honored to recognize Dr Gerald Friedland for his enduring leadership, vision, and contributions that have strengthened the field and improved the lives of countless individuals affected by and at risk for HIV.
