This enduring on-demand half-day virtual course explored emerging challenges in HIV medicine. This course delved into difficult cases in antiretroviral therapy, including the implementation of long-acting drugs. The course also addressed key issues in HIV prevention, such as postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) for sexual and occupational exposures, and the future of HIV vaccines in the context of emerging long-acting agents. Other key topics include updates on sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including the use of doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP), antimicrobial resistance trends, and national penicillin shortages, and highlights of recent data and guideline changes presented at major scientific conferences.

Assessment of Needs

Rapid advances in HIV disease management require the ongoing attention of practitioners involved in direct patient care. This course will address the implications of new information on strategies for the clinical management of HIV and other emerging challenges in HIV medicine. Information will be presented through a mix of didactic lectures, clinically relevant cases, and discussions developed and led by an expert faculty of HIV/AIDS clinicians and researchers.

Learning Objectives

After participating in the activity, learners will be able to:

  • Implement the latest recommendations for initiating and changing antiretroviral therapy in clinical circumstances such as comorbid conditions, coinfections, pregnancy, and geriatric syndromes
  • Describe the most current data from recent scientific conferences, including research on new and investigational antiretroviral drugs
  • Describe best practices for PEP following sexual and occupational exposures, including differences in follow-up protocols and vaccination considerations
  • Assess the evolving role of HIV vaccines, including current research directions and the need for vaccines in the context of long-acting prevention strategies
  • Describe the latest evidence-based treatment guidelines for common STIs, including clinical implications and antimicrobial resistance trends

Conflicts of Interest

In the interest of maintaining the independence of its continuing medical education (CME) activities, the International Antiviral Society–USA (IAS–USA) requires all persons with control of educational content (eg, faculty, Scientific Leadership Board, Governance Board, and program planner) to disclose any financial relationships with ineligible companies (previously defined as “commercial interests”) that they have had within the past 24 months. Any real or apparent conflicts of interest of those parties are resolved and mitigated prior to the CME activity being delivered. Individuals who refuse to disclose financial interests may not participate in IAS–USA CME activities.  

The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) defines ineligible companies as “those whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients.” 

IAS–USA has identified and mitigated ahead of time any possible conflicts of interest that may influence CME activities with regard to exposition or conclusion. Information about financial relationships with ineligible companies for the presenter and planners/reviewers is below and in the slides prior to the presentation of educational content.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for physicians who are actively involved in the medical care of people with HIV infection and:

  • Have a solid, working knowledge of HIV disease management
  • Provide comprehensive or specialty care for patients with HIV infection
  • Are currently active in HIV research

This activity is also relevant to nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physician assistants, registered pharmacists, and other health professionals.

CME Credits

The International Antiviral Society–USA (IAS–USA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The IAS–USA designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 3.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

ABIM MOC Points

ABIM MOCSuccessful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 3.75 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. IAS-USA, the CME activity provider, will submit your participant information (eg, name, date of birth, activity credits earned, ABIM MOC number) to ABIM through the PARS system for the purpose of reporting ABIM MOC credits

Nursing Credits

Educational Review Systems is an approved approver of continuing nursing education by the ASNA, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.  Provider # 5-115.  This program is approved for 3.75 hours of continuing nursing education.

Educational Review Systems is also approved for nursing continuing education by the state of California (Provider # 14692), the state of Florida and the District of Columbia.

This program is approved for 3.75 hours of pharmacotherapy credit.

Pharmacy Credits

Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education logo Educational Review Systems is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Participants of the session who complete the evaluation and provide accurate NABP e-Profile information will have their credit for 3.75 contact hours (0.375 CEU) submitted to CPE Monitor as early as 14 days after the event and no later than 60 days after the event. Please know that if accurate e-Profile information is not provided within 60 days of the event, credit cannot be claimed after that time. The participant is accountable for verifying the accurate posting of CE credit to their CPE Monitor account within 60 days.
