Forgotten but Not Gone: Learning From the Hepatitis A Outbreak and Public Health Response in San Diego County

The IAS–USA offers this state-of-the-art activity on the evolving challenges of managing HCV disease and related viral infections as part of a nationwide continuing medical education (CME) effort for physicians.

San Diego County in California experienced the second largest hepatitis A outbreak within the United States in the post-vaccine era. This webinar will review recent epidemiologic and clinical trends in hepatitis A using that outbreak as a case study, focusing on homeless and substance-using populations. The webinar will cover the public health challenges presented by the San Diego hepatitis A outbreak and unique measures that were taken to respond.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this webinar, learners will be able to:

• Discuss the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and less common manifestations of hepatitis A infection
• Describe the national trends in hepatitis A infection in the post-vaccine area
• Discuss the social factors contributing to the outbreak of hepatitis A in San Diego and the innovative public health response used to slow the outbreak

Who Should Attend

This webinar is designed for physicians who have a good understanding of the basics of viral hepatitis transmission, testing, and management and who have managed hepatitis infection in at least 5 patients.

This activity is also relevant for registered nurses, PharmDs, and other health professionals.

Individual registration is required, even if you are viewing as a group, in order to receive CME credit or a certificate of participation.

Conflicts of Interest

In the interest of maintaining the independence of its CME activities, and in accordance with the policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the IAS–USA requires all persons with control of content (eg, faculty, IAS–USA Board members, and program staff) to disclose any financial relationships that they or their spouses or partners have had with commercial companies within the past 12 months. Any real or apparent conflicts of interest of those parties are resolved prior to the CME activity being delivered. Individuals who refuse to disclose financial interests may not participate in an IAS–USA CME activity.

The ACCME defines a commercial interest as “any entity producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients. The ACCME does not consider providers of clinical service directly to patients to be commercial interests – unless the provider of clinical service is owned, or controlled by, an ACCME-defined commercial interest.”
