Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Neurocognitive Disorders in People With HIV (On-Demand)

Assessment of Needs

As people with HIV are living longer due to advances in antiretroviral therapy, clinicians are increasingly caring for an aging population at risk for neurocognitive disorders. Differentiating cognitive impairment related to HIV infection from other causes of cognitive decline including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), depression, and cerebrovascular disease remains a crucial challenge with substantial implications for patient management. Ongoing gaps persist in clinician knowledge regarding the epidemiology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and management of cognitive impairment in adults with HIV. This webinar will address these gaps by reviewing current evidence on neurocognitive disorders in people with HIV, improving clinicians’ ability to differentiate among causes of cognitive impairment and enhancing evidence-based management strategies to optimize patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives

On completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

• Describe HIV invasion into the central nervous system (CNS) and the clinical significance of the HIV CNS reservoir
• Describe the epidemiology and clinical presentation of neurocognitive disorders in people with HIV
• Outline the diagnostic testing used to evaluate and differentiate between a wide variety of causes for cognitive decline in people with HIV, including HIV-related brain injury, AD, and cerebrovascular disease
• List evidence-based strategies for the prevention and management of cognitive decline in people with HIV
