Overview
Assessment of Needs
Weight gain and obesity are increasingly prevalent among people with HIV (PWH), and excess adiposity likely contributes to the growing burden of cardiometabolic disease in this population. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have emerged as an effective therapeutic option for weight management, demonstrating substantial weight reduction and associated improvements in cardiometabolic parameters among PWH. This webinar will review the multifactorial contributors to weight gain in individuals receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) and discuss current evidence-based strategies for managing weight gain in PWH. In addition, the session will address practical clinical challenges, including adverse effects, medication access, and strategies to support patient adherence.
Learning Objectives
On completion of this activity, learners will be able to:
- Describe a multifaceted approach to weight management in PWH
- Describe indications for GLP-1 RA therapy in PWH
- List GLP-1 RA injectable and oral formulations, doses, and adverse reactions
- Manage GLP-1 RA therapy for PWH based on efficacy, safety, and tolerability data
- Registration
