Optimizing the Evaluation and Management of Osteoporosis in the HIV-Infected Patient

Assessment of Needs

The IAS–USA offers this state-of-the-art activity on the evolving challenges of managing HIV disease as part of a nationwide continuing medical education (CME) effort for physicians.

Fractures will become increasingly common as the population living with HIV gets into their 5^th and 6^th decade and beyond and will contribute to both morbidity and mortality. There is good evidence that the prevalence of osteoporosis is higher in people with HIV compared to people without HIV of the same age.  The reasons for this are multiple, including a high burden of traditional osteoporosis risk factors in those with HIV, effects of certain antiretroviral therapies, and effects of chronic HIV infection.  This webinar will focus on what providers and patients can do to prevent fractures from happening to preserve lifespans and health spans in patients aging with HIV.

On the completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:

• Describe the risk factors for bone loss in HIV-infected persons
• Manage antiretroviral therapy to minimize the impact on bone
• List treatments to improve bone health in HIV-infected persons
• Describe the risks and benefits of treatments

This activity is also relevant for registered nurses, PharmDs, and other health professionals.
