This Cases on the Web activity describes a case and presents various clinical decision points, each focusing on the primary medical care of a patient with HIV infection. At each decision point, learners should select the option that they think is most sound. Learning Objectives

On completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

• Describe the indications for HIV screening and characteristics of the HIV antibody test
• Decide the general approach to primary care of an HIV-infected patient, including stratified management based on the CD4+ cell count, appropriate follow-up, and management of long-term complications
• Identify health care maintenance issues relevant to the care of an HIV-infected patient, including immunizations; screening for coinfections, cancers, and other medical conditions; and general health issues
• Manage a patient with a newly detectable HIV viral load, focusing on medication adherence and avoiding drug interactions
• Develop a rational approach to the evaluation of new symptoms in an HIV-infected patient
• Identify and treat depression in this patient population

Assessment of Needs

The IAS–USA offers this state-of-the-art activity as part of a nationwide CME effort for physicians on the evolving challenges of managing HIV disease. This activity examines the immunization needs and considerations for adults living with HIV infection.

Intended Audience

This Cases on the Web presentation is designed for physicians who are new to the practice of HIV medicine or are seeking to refresh their understanding of the standard elements of HIV care.

This activity is also relevant for other practitioners, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and pharmacists.

CME Information

Accreditation

The International Antiviral Society–USA (IAS–USA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation Statement

The IAS–USA designates this enduring material for a maximum of 2.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This CME activity is offered from December 1, 2017, to December 1, 2018. Participants who successfully complete the activity posttest and submit the evaluation and registration forms are eligible to receive CME credit. Physicians (MDs, DOs, and international equivalents) may receive CME credit for completing this activity. Other health care practitioners will receive a certificate of participation.

Pharmacy Continuing Education Contact Hours

Educational Review Systems is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program is approved for 2 hours (0.2 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit. Proof of participation will be posted to your NABP CPE profile within 4 to 6 weeks to participants who have successfully completed the post-test. Participants must participate in the entire presentation and complete the course evaluation to receive continuing pharmacy education credit.

Dr Glassman is an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School and a primary care physician at Healthcare Associates at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. She is certified as an HIV specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM).

Dr Libman is Professor of Medicine, Emeritus, at Harvard Medical School and Deputy Editor for Primary Care at UptoDate. Dr Libman is coeditor of the textbook, HIV, published by the American College of Physicians. He is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America national expert guidelines panel on HIV primary care and a core faculty member of the IAS–USA.
