This Cases on the Web (COW) activity describes a case and presents various clinical decision points, each focusing on issues relevant to the care of an HIV-infected patient who has dementia.

At each decision point, participants should select the option that they think is most sound and then read the presenters’ explanation of that option. Selecting the correct option links the participant to an extended discussion of the related medical findings, research-based evidence, and case management considerations.

After reviewing the cases, participants may access the activity posttest and the course evaluation, both of which must be completed and submitted to claim continuing medical education (CME) credit or a certificate of participation or continuing education units (CEUs) or nursing or pharmacy credits. Learning Objectives

On completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

• Identify functional decline
• Describe the spectrum of neurocognitive disorders among HIV-infected persons
• Identify the role of a geriatrician and commonly used geriatric assessment tools
• List alternative formulations of antiretroviral drugs

Assessment of Needs

The IAS–USA offers this state-of-the-art activity as part of a nationwide CME effort for physicians on the evolving challenges of managing HIV disease. This activity examines issues relevant to the care of an HIV-infected patient who has dementia.

Intended Audience

This enduring material is designed for physicians who are actively treating or will be treating patients with HIV infection.

This activity is also relevant for other practitioners, including nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and others.

CME Information

Accreditation

The International Antiviral Society–USA (IAS–USA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation Statement

The IAS–USA designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This CME activity is offered from January 22, 2018, to January 22, 2019. Physicians (MDs, DOs, and international equivalents) who successfully complete the activity posttest and submit the evaluation and registration forms are eligible to receive CME credit. Other health care practitioners will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Nursing Continuing Education Contact Hours

Educational Review Systems is an approved approver of continuing nursing education by the Alabama State Nursing Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Provider # 5-115. This program is approved for 1.5 hours of continuing nursing education.

Educational Review Systems is also approved for nursing continuing education by the state of California, the state of Florida and the District of Columbia.

Pharmacy Continuing Education Contact Hours

Educational Review Systems is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program is approved for 1.5 hours (0.15 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit. Proof of participation will be posted to your NABP CPE profile within 4 to 6 weeks to participants who have successfully completed the post-test. Participants must participate in the entire presentation and complete the course evaluation to receive continuing pharmacy education credit.

Harjot K. Singh, MD, ScM
Dr Singh is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Infectious Diseases at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, New York. Her clinical expertise is in the management of HIV infection. Her academic interests include HIV and aging, medical education, and quality improvement in HIV care.

Eugenia Siegler, MD
Dr Siegler is Mason Adams Professor of Geriatric Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, New York. She is also the medical director of the inpatient geriatrics service at the Weill Cornell campus of the New York Presbyterian Hospital. Her academic interests include geriatric education and electronic health record (EHR) documentation quality.

Dr Lampiris is Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), and Chief of the Infectious Diseases Section at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Meredith Greene, MD
Dr Greene is a Fellow in the Division of Geriatrics at UCSF. Her research focuses on HIV and geriatric medicine, and she is involved in the UCSF Housecalls program, which serves homebound older patients.

Northeast/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC)
This activity was developed in collaboration with the Northeast/Caribbean AETC, 1 of 8 federally funded regional centers nationwide that conducts targeted multidisciplinary HIV and AIDS education and training programs for health care practitioners. Funded by the USDHHS Health Resources and Services Administration (grant # U1OHA29291), the mission of the New York and New Jersey AETC is to assist health care professionals through education and training, to provide optimum quality services and sensitive care to HIV-infected persons, and to provide access to current information related to HIV and AIDS research and treatment.
