(Part 4 of 4) More Than One Problem: Mental Illness as a Contributing Factor of Pain and Substance Use in People With HIV

Assessment of Needs

Mental illness encompasses a large array of syndromes from mood disorders to thought disorders to personality disorders, which can directly impact pain and substance use. This talk will provide a general overview of the interrelated aspects of mental illness, pain, and substance use among people with HIV (PWH). Additionally, this talk will provide concrete guidance on screening and how to address the results of that screening.  Importantly, this talk will address how primary HIV practitioners can address some complex problems when referral to other mental health practitioners is not available.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this webinar, learners will be able to:

• Describe the key mental health diagnoses in people with HIV and chronic pain and how mental health impacts pain perception
• Initiate appropriate screening for mental health disorders
• Implement the basic principles of treatment for people with mental health disorder, HIV, and chronic pain

Conflicts of Interest

In the interest of maintaining the independence of its CME activities, and in accordance with the policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the IAS–USA requires all persons with control of content (eg, faculty, IAS–USA Board members, and program staff) to disclose any financial relationships that they or their spouses or partners have had with commercial companies within the past 12 months.
